What Clients Want To Know Before Hiring An Architect (and our honest answers)

07.16.2025

Choosing an architect is about more than plans and elevations. It’s about finding a team you trust to listen carefully, think critically, and guide your project with clarity from the very beginning. At Collective Architecture, we believe the process should feel collaborative, focused, and well-supported at every step.

What sets us apart is our integrated approach. We’re a team of architects and designers who bring broad experience and shared intention to each home we design. You may be starting from raw land, considering a remodel, or still exploring your options. We’re here to help you navigate the path ahead.

Over the years, we’ve had hundreds of early conversations with clients. Each one is unique, but many center around the same key questions. Below, we’re sharing the ones we hear most and how we answer them.

1. What does your process look like?

We begin with discovery: learning how you live, how you hope to feel in the space, and what qualities are most important to you. This phase shapes everything that follows.

From there, we move through a structured architectural process that includes schematic design, design development, documentation, and permitting. We provide clear visuals, targeted recommendations, and ongoing dialogue as the design evolves. We remain involved throughout construction, answering questions, reviewing shop drawings, and visiting the site to ensure the vision is realized with care.

2. How much does it cost?

Project costs vary depending on scale, location, and complexity. Design fees and construction budgets are never one-size-fits-all, which is why budget is one of the first things we talk about.

We walk through typical costs, share guidance, and help you prioritize based on your goals. From the start, we focus on transparency so you can make informed decisions and move forward with clarity.

3. When should I bring in an architect?

As early as possible. Even if you're still looking at land or comparing properties, having an architect at the table early helps shape layout, orientation, and scope in ways that are difficult to adjust later.

We’re often the first professional clients engage, and we welcome that role. Early involvement gives your project a stronger start and leads to better results.

4. Do you work on new homes and renovations?

Yes, we do both. Our portfolio includes custom new builds and comprehensive remodels. Each project is approached with the same level of care, design clarity, and attention to detail.

In renovation work, we focus on what should be preserved, what can be reimagined, and how to bring coherence to the overall plan.

5. How long will the project take?

The timeline depends on a number of factors: site conditions, permitting, level of customization, and construction scope. Some projects move quickly, while others unfold over the course of a year or more.

We’ll talk through what to expect based on your goals and location. Our role is to keep things moving, provide clarity at each step, and help you plan with confidence.

6. What is your role during construction?

We remain closely involved once construction begins. Our team answers contractor questions, visits the site regularly, and ensures the built work aligns with the intent of the design.

Architecture is not complete with the final drawing set. Continued involvement protects the integrity of the vision and supports a smoother build.

7. Can you collaborate with an interior designer or refer one?

Yes, and in many cases we already are. We collaborate closely with our partners at Collective Design and other trusted interiors teams to ensure cohesion across architecture and interiors.

You may already have a designer in mind or need help finding the right fit. In both cases, we believe early collaboration leads to a more integrated and complete result.

8. How are you different from other firms?

We are selective, experienced, and fully engaged in each project we take on. Our work is guided by clarity and rigor, and our team is known for staying hands-on throughout the process.

We do not apply a standard style or aesthetic. Instead, we design in response to the people, program, and setting, creating architecture that is lasting, refined, and specific to each client.

9. How do I know if my project is a good fit for your team?

Our work is especially well suited to clients seeking custom homes in mountain towns and high-elevation environments. These sites come with their own design opportunities and technical requirements, and we bring experience navigating both.

If you are looking for a team that values craft, communication, and creative problem solving, we may be the right match.
