What Clients Want to Know Before Hiring a Designer (And Our Honest Answers)

09.12.2024

1. What does your process look like?

We begin with a personalized discovery phase designed to understand how you live, what inspires you, and how you want your space to feel. This foundational step allows us to align with your vision, priorities, and design preferences from the very beginning.

From there, we move through a structured process that includes space planning, selections for fixed finishes, furnishings, and final styling. Along the way, we provide visual presentations, tailored recommendations, and consistent communication. With a dedicated project lead and full team support, we manage timelines, vendors, and details with precision, ensuring a seamless experience from start to finish.

2. How much does it cost?

While we’d love to offer a simple answer, the truth is that costs vary based on your space, style, and scope, which is why budget is one of the first conversations we have. It should never feel uncomfortable to ask.

We approach every project with transparency, helping you align your investment with your goals. We break down where your dollars are going, offer guidance, and help you prioritize what matters most. Whether you have a set range or need help defining one, we tailor our recommendations to work within it, so your budget works for your vision.

A woman with long blonde hair stands at a desk in a design studio, examining architectural plans. Shelves behind her display various tile samples with geometric patterns. A phone and papers are on the desk.

3. How involved do I need to be?

As involved as you’d like. Some clients enjoy being hands-on with every detail. Others prefer to hand over the reins. Most land somewhere in between.

Early on, we’ll ask how often you’d like updates, what decisions you want to be part of, and how you prefer to communicate. We’ll adjust our approach to fit your style, while keeping you informed, aligned, and supported throughout.

4. Can I incorporate some of my own furniture or art?

Absolutely. Personal pieces bring meaning, history, and character to a space, and we love weaving them into the overall design. Whether it’s a favorite chair, a vintage rug, or a piece of art with a story behind it, we’ll integrate it thoughtfully.

We consider scale, placement, palette, and proportion so your space feels cohesive and layered, reflecting not just great design, but your personal story.

5. Do You Support Remodels and New Builds?

We specialize in interior design for both remodels and new construction, as well as furnishing projects. Whether you’re updating an existing home or building from the ground up, our team provides guidance on fixed finishes like tile, flooring, and countertops, and collaborates on layout and lighting plans to align with your overall vision.

We work closely with your builder and architect to ensure everything comes together seamlessly. Whether you’re remodeling or starting from the ground up, we bring clarity, cohesion, and creativity to every step of the process.

6. How long will the project take?

Timelines vary depending on the size and scope of your project. Furnishing a home typically takes several months, while remodels and new construction can extend to a year or more, especially when layered with architectural and construction timelines.

From the start, we set clear expectations so you know what to anticipate at each phase. Our team is experienced in managing lead times, vendor coordination, and decision-making milestones to keep your project on track. While every project is different, our approach is always proactive, organized, and designed to keep things moving forward with confidence.

7. Do I have to purchase everything through Collective Design?

Not at all. You’re welcome to bring in pieces you already love or shop for items on your own, we’ll work with you.

That said, many clients choose to purchase through us because it streamlines the process. We offer access to exclusive trade-only items, manage procurement, shipping, storage, and handle white-glove installation. It reduces friction, saves time, and often results in fewer surprises along the way.

A woman in a white dress stands by a round coffee table in a living room, reaching to pick up an open book from a tray. Beige sofas with various cushions surround the scene.

8. Can you help me visualize the finished space?

Absolutely. We use mood boards, renderings, finish samples, and curated design presentations so you can see the full vision before anything is ordered.

These tools help translate ideas into something tangible, giving you a clear sense of how the space will look and feel. We walk you through each element, answer questions, and refine details together so every decision feels intentional and collaborative.

9. I’ve never worked with a designer, what should I expect?

That’s more common than you might think, and it’s exactly why our process is built to feel approachable and supportive.

You don’t need to know design terminology or have a fully formed vision. Our role is to ask the right questions, listen closely, and guide you every step of the way. We break the process down into clear, manageable phases, so you always know what’s next.

10. How do you work with my builder or architect?

With years of experience collaborating on custom homes across the country, we’ve developed a design process that integrates seamlessly with builders and architects from day one. Our team steps in early to review architectural plans through a design lens, refining layouts, identifying opportunities, and ensuring every space supports both function and flow.

We lead finish and material selections with a cohesive vision in mind, aligning each choice with the broader design strategy. Throughout the build, we remain actively involved, communicating directly with your construction team to answer questions, resolve details, and ensure the original vision is executed with precision. It’s a thoughtful, hands-on approach that leads to a smoother process and a beautifully unified result.
